It started as one of those ordinary moments that never feel important until much later.

I was in the yard early one morning, coffee in hand, still half-asleep, doing a quick walk-around before starting the day. The grass was damp with dew, the air quiet in that peaceful way that exists only before the world wakes up.

That’s when I saw them.

At first, I thought they were ping-pong balls.

Small. White. Perfectly round. Scattered near the back fence, half-hidden in the grass like someone had dropped a bag of them and walked away.

I frowned, confused more than concerned. We don’t own ping-pong balls. Our neighbors don’t have kids. And they definitely weren’t there the night before.

Curiosity nudged me closer.
